Franklin Park

In November 2007, Cook County passed an ordinance, Chapter 10 Animmals,
Article IV Managed Care of Feral Cats, Section 10-95 through 10-99, Article IV, Managed Care of Feral Cats.  The ordinance promotes and endorses the care and reduction of cats living in our streets through a Comprehensive Trap Neuter Return (TNR) Program.  TNR is the only effective, humane method of reducing street cat populations.

The benefits of a strong TNR program:

•No more unwanted litters of kittens, no more sick, suffering kittens
•Fewer outside cats through natural attrition
•No more nuisance behaviors related to breeding, such as howling, fighting,
and urine marking
•Cats living healthier, safer lives
•Lowered risk of parasites such as fleas and worms infecting household pets
•Lowered risk of euthanization by a shelter or animal control facility for ear-tipped, microchipped cats
Cats are humanely trapped, taken to a licensed veterinary clinic where they
are spayed or neutered, given rabies and distemper vaccines, they are eartipped
and microchipped.  They are also given medication for fleas, ticks, ear mites and parasites and a wellness exam.   After a short recovery period they are returned
to the place where they were trapped so their caretakers can provide food, water
and shelter.

Once this is complete, the cats are registered with a Cook County Sponsoring
agency, (CatVando is an authorized CC Sponsor)  their location and caretaker information is always kept confidential and they become a protected, legal colony.

CatVando is a TNR group currently working in the Franklin Park area.  They were recently awarded a PetSmart Charities grant to cover partial cost of the TNR
package in a targeted area in Franklin Park.  It's a 2 year grant with the first
area being between Schiller & Grand, Manheim & Scott.  However, if you don't
live in the targeted area, help is still available.

CatVando is currently seeking people who are feeding cats, experienced and inexperiencedtrappers and volunteers to help with this project. They are hoping to collaborate with the strong individuals who have been helping the cats of
Franklin Park for years.
